A blog is a daily or weekly Internet journal. Most blogs consist of stories that some may find inspirational, funny, or just plain interesting. A blog is usually written by one person and meant to be read by many. Incorporating this into your church website design can increase the number of visitors on a regular basis.

When you create your church websites design, incorporating a blog for someone to compose on a weekly basis is a very good idea. They not only keep your visitors informed but your current congregation as well. Choose one person, this can be either the pastor or an elder, who will write each week about what has occurred during the week and tell stories relating to some of those events.

You should have some guidelines for your parishes’ blogger in order to keep the blogs interesting and in line with their purpose which is to keep your visitors and congregation informed. We will examine some of those guidelines here:

1) When writing a blog, write as though you are writing an email to a friend. This will make your readers feel welcomed instead of feeling as though they are infringing on your privacy.

2) Be honest and real. Do not tell stories that are far fetched or unbelievable. Keep them simple and real.

3) Be candid with your readers. If you make a mistake, inform the readers of the mistake and what you are doing to rectify the situation.

4) Ask yourself, “How does this post help my readers?” You always want to make sure there is a message to your readers in the blog post.

5) Make sure that you write about what you know and love. If you struggle to write a blog because it is about a subject you are not familiar with, your readers will know it.

6) Make your posts as inviting as possible. Remember, you are on a journey and you want your readers to join in that journey.

7) Remember who you are writing your blog for. It isn’t intellectuals or an entire host of religious figures. You want to include the non-Christians as well as the Christians. Therefore make sure your blog posts are written in a non-offensive, non-Evangelical simple language that everyone will understand.

8) Tell repeatable stories in your blog posts. People love to read stories and repeat the good ones to others.

Make sure you include a link where your readers can comment on your blog posts. This will give you a better insight into what they are looking for and how to connect with them. Always keep it simple and fun. A blog should not feel like a job but something fun to incorporate into your weekly activities.

These are just simple guidelines for you to get started with. Once your church website design is launched and you begin your blog, you will develop more of your own guidelines to follow. Allow your readers the opportunity to become engaged in your blogging by offering them the chance to comment on your blogs and soon you will have a blog that is viewed on a regular basis by many faithful and loyal readers.
